Everyone has a "why" or two for why they do what they do. For me one of my big why's is my dad. This guy was behind a camera all the time growing up...and he always had the newest camera tech. He always had a laugh and a helping hand ready for his friends and family. November 30, 2001 was the last day I ever spoke to my dad, he passed unexpectedly the next day. Suddenly all I had of my dad were the memories of an adolescent girl, and the pictures he left behind. Those pictures are some the most precious thing in the world to me. Just looking at his face helps me hear his voice in my memory clearer, and looking at the pictures he took of me reminds me just how much he loved me. I communicate my love to my daughter in the same way even now- she and I have an awesome time playing dress up and doing photoshoots together.
So that's one of my big "why's." Because life is short, and we're not guaranteed tomorrow, and because every time I pick up my camera I'm reminded of my dad's prolific collection of cameras that were always pointed at me. Providing people with images of their favorite humans that will hang on their walls for years to come is something that is very meaningful to me. I know just how important a single picture can be to a person, and I consider it an honor and a great responsibility to create those special images of your most important people <3
'Tis the season to shoot indoors...(fa la lala laaa lala la la) Now that our temperatures are dropping (and oh man are they...maybe we'll have a real winter this year?) most of my work moves indoors...something about goosebumps and blue lips just isn't cute in portraits haha!
My studio had a full renovation over the summer (I'll have a future post dedicated to it!) and it's all ready to make some magic this season. I have a pile of holiday crowns, an assortment of beautiful shawls, boleros and capelets, and fistfuls of glitter all waiting to make some timeless holiday portraits of your littles! These images make great gifts for grandparents (and moms! ...I see you guy whose wife forwarded this post haha!)
Through December 31 I will be running my studio holiday sessions for $175 which includes 5 images from your session, access to my client wardrobe, and full styling!
Get in touch asap to reserve your spot- and I can't wait to see you all of your beautiful babies over the coming months!
This little bright eyed sweetheart is the daughter of another talented photographer- Kenesha Facello. After a bit of a long day of assisting for me, and some extremely uncooperative weather, we got her little princess in for some fairy shots.
This little girl is the pinnacle of why I love photographing toddlers- their natural curiosity and easy joy always make for a fun session (as long as we can keep away from a meltdown haha!) Every smile in this session is genuine, and mostly aimed at her mama- which to me always makes the sweetest smiles.
Thanks for the assist friend! Can't wait to get your little munchkin in front of my glass again!
I love it when I get an opportunity to take a session to a full on fairy tale place- having free reign really lets my creativity flow. This little girl's mama always sets me loose with her- and after 3.5 years working with her we have a pretty good flow together! We started first in the studio with some slightly more standard photos- which you will have to wait for, then headed out to an area I knew would translate beautifully into a fairy wonderland. My little nymph and I left her mama in the parking lot with her new baby brother and made some magic together.
Her beautiful pink dress was created by CoralieBeatrix - it moved so beautifully, I'm so glad I could add it to my collection!
Every year I pull that little tiara out and it seems to get smaller on your head. This year when I look at you I see so little baby left in that face. We are fast approaching full blown childhood and I keep looking for the brakes. Last week you turned 5, and today you started kindergarten.
I can't believe what an amazing little human you're growing into. Every day your silliness and love bring me more joy than you can know.
You, my wonderful girl, are my sunshine.
This girl was sweet as can be. She started a little shy with me and very concerned about posing, but she relaxed very quickly and was a perfect little fairy! I styled her in a Tutu Du Monde dress from my client wardrobe along with a beautiful pair of Belle Chiara ballet flats that I've been dying to put someone in! But her eyes really lit up when I pulled out some beautiful wings from Hello Faerie and a very regal feeling crown from Joyfolie. Okay so I may never have fully grown out of the dress up stage haha!
I really love the Denver Botanic Gardens in the early summer- the diversity of plant life is amazing and offers so many unique backdrops. I could wander for hours and never stop finding a new beautiful spot...which is basically what we did this day. I also like to keep moving when working with kids- it keeps them interested and having fun- a bored kid never photographs well!
If you're interested in booking a fairy session for your little one please
Oh man these girls were too much. I shot their session simultaneously with a long time friend of theirs, so I had a whole flock of fairies running around these gardens with me...we certainly got some attention haha!
These two were total hams- they loved playing fairy and once they settled in they started posing for me like little rock stars. The little one was basically vogueing at one point which was endlessly entertaining. I loved styling the girls in coordinating Tutu Du Monde dresses from my client wardrobe- and while I don't yet have a full selection of shoes I just happened to have gladiator sandals in both girl's sizes. Kismet!
The best was seeing how much these two love each other...sometimes posing siblings is like pulling teeth, but these two had a sweet comfort together that was fully genuine.
So someone on the marketing team for the state of Idaho is a genius at tugging those sentimental heartstrings. They're running an ad campaign called "18 summers" ...the message of course being that we get 18 summers of our babies' childhoods. When I'm sitting here buried in work and shooting every other day I have to remember to stop and enjoy the little moments with this incredible tiny (but oh man getting so much less tiny every day) human.
So today we'll be at the pool. I won't be answering calls or emails- I promise I'll be back on the grid tomorrow. Today is for chlorinated shennanigans and popsicles with my baby...you know...while she still almost qualifies to be called that.
Winter is my dead zone. I spend all those cold indoor months thinking about all the places I want to shoot...yes- I am a photography nerd...why do you ask? ;)
So I've been planning this shoot at the RiNo art district for some time. If you've never been down there I highly suggest you take a day- well done street art is so incredible and the whole area is just full of color...I wish we would cover all of our buildings with art haha!
My mama was in town for Mother's day and had taken a few extra days to be in town so I decided it was time to dress the kiddo in the outfit I had long set aside for this purpose and head on down. We really just enjoyed strolling through the area and stopping to snap some shots any time inspiration struck...which is really my favorite way to shoot anyways- I'm no good at all at trying to get all my work done in an hour time frame >.< I will say that I'm lucky to have the rare kid that doesn't come down with "photographer's kid syndrome" (where they see a camera and run) but man she was EXTRA on point this day...I think it was the heart sunglasses- she was really feeling the movie star vibe!
Insanely cute open shoulder top by Bowie James
White jeans from Old Navy
Baby Adidas (which she looooves because they match Daddy's)
Amazing heart sunglasses from one of my favorite kid's online stores- Mini Dreamers
I love photographing kids in an urban scene- so if you're looking for a unique portrait session for your kiddo drop me a line- Denver has some amazing locations!
Have you ever had a moment or an experience that completely convinced you that you were exactly where you're meant to be, doing exactly what you're meant to do?
That was my shoot with Davin.
The day I met Davin was just an all around awesome day. I spent the morning photographing Santa with dozens of kids. I don't know if you've ever had an opportunity to just sit and watch kids light up for hours on end- but that was what I got to do for the whole morning. As the Santa pictures wound down, Santa and I got to talking about my little girl...and Santa said he would follow me home to pay her a visit!
If you're here you probably have a little one- so just imagine the super-hero bouncy feeling I had as I drove home with Santa following close behind in his lifted truck (Santa has a pretty serious vehicle when he's not driving the sleigh haha!) on his way to meet my girl at our house. Yeah. I was flying.
So that sets the scene for the mood I was already in when I first said hello to Davin. This kid- man he's something else. Davs is a natural born performer- you know the type...they just ooze energy and charisma- their personality JUST this side of overwhelming, but never quite crossing that line. And of course, he IS a performer. Davin is a ballet dancer- an incredibly passionate and talented one.
The second I first clicked my shutter magic happened. I'm not sure I had a bad shot for the whole session- the scenery was perfect, and I barely directed him at all. It was the kind of symbiotic session where Davin was doing what he loved (dancing and performing while being fawned over by an adoring fan) and I was doing what I loved. It was perfection.
I even drove home to the most incredible sunset.
This kid is something special- hes had some truly rough times, and his incredible mother works her tail off to keep him in dance. One day I know I'll be purchasing tickets to see him dance professionally- and for now just watching him grow as a dancer is such a privilege.
